I just don't understand the number of Hillary supporters who say they'll vote for McCain. So they'd rather abortion be banned than vote for a Democrat that isn't Hillary? Because from what I've read, McCain is even more anti-abortion than Bush. They're willing to sabotage their lives?
I'm sure that was part of it, but it seems more likely a sop to the religious right. Palin is strongly anti-choice, and favours teaching creationism in schools and such.
Anyone who claims to support Hillary, but votes for McCain, is just cutting off their nose to spite their face.
The interesting question in my book is whether Hillary comes after her. I'm guessing that the Republicans will try to portray any attacks against Palin as "anti-feminist" to cloud things up. Which might have some success -- unless Hillary is the one making the attacks.
I'm guessing that, while Hillary would probably prefer to be off the campaign trail at this point, the idea of Palin being the first woman in the White House instead of her is probably *horrifying* to her. So she might be willing to play the Democrats' counter in this case, and I'd bet that she would be extremely effective at doing so...
Honestly, I don't think it's at all clever to assume that Hillary supporters only loved her because of her girl parts. They are completely and insultingly underestimating the intelligence of Hillary supporters if they think Palin is a decent substitution.
I don't think anyone is that stupid. By which I mean:
1. I don't think that women blindly vote for women without any forethought. No matter what. Women THINK.
2. I don't think that anyone realistically thinks that women vote for women, axiomatically. Well, maybe a few dumb clucks.
3. One has to ask themselves: what did the McCain campaign truly need? It needed a younger and more conservative Veep, with sterling credentials in order to win back the New Righteous and Neo-Cons. Because the campaign needs money and support. A lot of it.
I think that, once again, his choice shows the sort of poor judgment that McCain is chronically displaying. She cannot and won't be a modern-style Vice President, a co-regnant with junior powers. She has to be a more "bucket of warm spit" style VP. She'll try to reassure the fading far right, while he's off trying to capture the middle. She's an accessory for campaigning, not a choice for eventual victory.
I haven't thought a lot, nor read a lot. But on first impression, it isn't her sexual characteristics that matter most - although they won't hurt. No one is really underestimating women here.
(I think they are seriously underestimating the American people, and the damage she can do to McCain's campaign. And her own ongoing Trooper-Gate issues with her former brother-in-law are going to be a REAL problem. Bad vetting and stupid choices.)
Oh yes. A very crafty choice by the Reps. By announcing it when they did, and by staging their own convention so close to the Dems, they've stolen a lot of attention and press time, and are hoping to curb the Convention Bump. Their choice of VP was also inspired - young, to offset the age image (although Biden's no spring chicken), female to steal some of the diehard Hillary camp and a woman-at-any-cost camp, pro oil, pro life to help the hard right swallow the idea of a woman, as strong a profile for Family Values as you could ask for, with 5 kids, one autistic, one in the military, with a blue collar oil rig working husband, and a legacy of cutting spending and setting sail in her own direction, to subtly deflate the mantra of Change from the other side.
Both VP choices this time around were very savvy, and even more political than I've seen before. It's warming up to be one hell of a fight. Time to go make some more popcorn!
I didn't think they'd be this blatant, but what do I know?
"Governor Palin is smart, authentic, tough, and a dynamic choice that will remind women that if they are not welcome on the Democrat's ticket, they have a place with Republicans." - Mike Huckabee
Oh, ya think? If he did, he's not just wrong, he's stupid and insulting as well. Because substituting Palin for Clinton assumes that Hillary's supporters were supporting a chromosome rather than a person with ideas. Politically, Palin and Clinton aren't even in the same galaxy, and if there actually is someone out there who feels that they're interchangeable simply because of that chromosome, quite frankly s/he doesn't deserve the franchise.

Egads, if Hillary supporters vote for an anti-choice ticket... *sigh*
