Get the house clean/tidy enough to entertain small groups of friends as we used to do.

My technique for that is actually the reverse: I commit to hosting my sewing circle on a particular Sunday afternoon (we usually schedule 2-3 months ahead, which is the only way we manage to align all six calendars), so then I know in advance which weekend I'm aiming for. It's not uncommon for other social events to then be scheduled in the week or so following, since I know the house will be in order...

This used to be a goal of mine, but these days I've realized that provided you can see the floors and all the really personal things are pushed far out of site, your real friends don't quite care how clean/tidy/messy/dirty your house is.

Y'know, I hate housework. It gives me no satisfaction. But I love a clean house, and if it gets too messy I can't function. Therefore, I threw money at the problem and hired houscleaners. I have two very nice not-quite-legal women from Brazil who clean my whole house every two weeks for $65 per cleaning. They've been with me for almost a decade.

You're both gainfully employed, do you have any interest in indulging yourselves like I do? I highly recommend it... and I can give you the name of my housecleaners, too, except that you shouldn't use them if you're thinking there's a political career in your future.
