One of my coworkers just received his new tent via UPS. It's a 10x10 Coleman dome. It's an upgrade for him and his wife and two kids, from their 7x7. Egad. I didn't tell him our big tent is 12x20, for the two of us.

Scadian camping is a lot more luxurious than standard camping, after all. And much more clothing. Can you imagine an Elizabethan persona in a pup tent? But they allegedly sleep two people.

I find tent ratings to be quaint. The 9'-diameter dome tent I had lo these many years ago was rated for 6! Even if it was just people in sleeping bags, that would have been challenging.

Granted that our Pennsic accommodations (10x20 outside perimeter, ~300 square feet interior, two people) could easily take on a few boarders, but still -- we need a lot more space for SCA camping than people do for mundane camping.

Cool! How do you fit 300 square feet inside a tent with outside dimensions of 10x20? I have wanted a Tortise Tent for _ever_ :-)

Come see it in person; I'll show you the warts and you can reduce your awe level. :-) But seriously, it's a fun project, and it has massively increased my Pennsic comfort (so it was worth it), but I also don't have any special skills here or anything. Other people can and have done similar things -- there's the guy with the Venetian canal house, and the pirate ship, and a couple of vardos, and of course the merchant houses. In some-assembly-required projects, there are several houses, a chapel, and probably other stuff. Any of us will be happy to talk your ear off about how you too can live in extreme comfort at camping events. :-)

I've been designing, but will never build, the perfect SCA camping trailer. Designing for about 2 years.

Two story tudor structure, collapsible for trailering, has everything for all-weather camping mundane or SCA, except a good bathroom. For that it's still portalet... Much of the furniture is collapsible for the second floor.

Wired for power (12/120), concealed interior and exterior lights, fire safe, small kitchen, etcetera.

Ooh, sounds nifty. What size trailer are you packing all of that into? And why won't you build it -- inertia, or never quite being done twiddling with the design?

The rough idea now is to use a car transporter, and make the second floor a "sleeve" which can be raised and lowered for camping or transport.

Why? Many reasons... no place to build or store it, would require a much bigger vehicle to tow it, lack of some of the appropriate skills (mind, it would be great fun to learn how to weld and all) and a diminishing interest in the Society for now...

I am enjoying hacking on the design, of course, but the rough outlines of the plan have been stable for a year or more.

Once my financial problems vanish (hah!) and I buy a
new larger house with room, and decide to purchase a giant truck to tow it, and learn all the skills, and need to go to more events... (:-)

No, I'm sorry -- that doesn't work. I *have* seen it in person, you *have* pointed out the warts, and I am *still* in awe. The house is just mondo-cool...

In the SCA you can't keep your gear in the car parked conveniently next to the tent... If you add the storage space of a car to the sleeping space of a tent, and then consider a week's stay at a time; it all starts to make sense.

I still think that 7x7 is a bit small, even for 2 adults with two tiny kids. But if they can all share the air mattress....

Which I would also do mundane camping, if I had the screenhouse and not the car in camp. Or I'd get a bear canister or hang the food if backpacking. Food does NOT belong in my tent.

I really do think it's mostly garb and crafts, at least for me, that require more space in SCA camping. I can happily camp mundanely with less clothing and only one lucet. Oh, and when backpacking, the pack lives outside the tiny tent and I dress outside when necessary. Come to think of it, I sort of did that last year at GNE...
