Alice finally got around to asking me to be an officer next year. Given the horrible politics in our chapter surrounding her station for 09-10, I wasn't sure she would; I kind of hoped she would not.

And she asked me to take a station I have never done before, which gives my brain a little stretch. Next year, I will be Chaplain. I demonstrated to myself in the car between the regional meetings yesterday that I already know the two main prayers, and just need to learn the Opening and the Initiation bits.

My favorite chair! But they won't let me do it anymore (or marshall or assistant marshall) since both the chapters I belong to insist I be able to sing everything.

I am all envious.

Assistant Marshal? What does that officer do? We don't have one.

And who says you can't sing if you're Chaplain?

(Some time I'm going to visit a NY chapter and check out the differences. One Order, many traditions.)

The chaplain can't sing the Grand Matron's hymn (which is usually hard, so they really need me). If you are facing the East, the Marshall and Asst. Marshall sit on the floor,in front of the secretary's desk, south side of the East. "...assist the Marshall in her duties." I.e. help with obligation, lead the labyrinth, escort the flag, collect good of the Order. Think "Assoc. Conductress" except there is no duty solely the responsibility of the Asst. Marshall.

Since the marshalls move so much, they always want me there since I'm really mobile compared to most of the sisters. However, that means there'd be no one to carry the National Anthem or anything else sung while the flag is being accompanied.

You have an open invitation to come out and join us sometime, but of course our chapter meetings are during the week. (We belong to 2 districts, so 2 Grand Matrons visits and 2 days--we have the dates for this year and next already, and they're always on the weekends for our districts...."

Ahhh...8-)

To me, this is as close as you get to a "minister" in the order - the chaplaincy is our spiritual heart in practical form. Am delighted that I will be able to see and hear you give it breath. This is a beautiful thing.

Hugs,
