I'm sure that was part of it, but it seems more likely a sop to the religious right. Palin is strongly anti-choice, and favours teaching creationism in schools and such.

Anyone who claims to support Hillary, but votes for McCain, is just cutting off their nose to spite their face.

Lifetime NRA member, avid hunter, supports drilling in ANWAR (as almost all Alaskans do, but McCain doesn't) - yeah, you are correct - this is to cement support from the far Right.

But not necessarily those from the *establishment* far right. She has a reputation for taking on her own party, much like the image McCain has been trying so hard to foster (when he isn't sucking up to his own party, that is).
