Please refer to this image, this image, and dozens of other images from pre-, post-, and period Indian art.
However I will say, in the interest of full disclosure, that to be perfectly true to my persona of a 13th century woman from the Southernmost regions, I shouldn't really be wearing any choli at all. Stupid modern American modesty!

Full of win.

And congrats on the Manche! Sorry to have missed congratulating you in person.

You're showing me Mughal art and making a claim about Southern Dravidian culture and costume? Ok, why not open a pepsi and call it the same as amrita!

You stated "It violates all historical and contemporary subcontinental principles of modesty", and I was illustrating that no, it doesn't. I was not even remotely claiming that wearing a backless choli was appropriate for a Dravidian costume, in fact, I specifically stated that it most decidedly was not.
Next time I suggest that you a) read for comprehension, and b) do some research beyond what your modern Indian music instructors tell you before attacking people with your post-Mughal, post-Victorian knowledge of Indian morality and values.

I am sorry you're getting this dishonorable coward's crap in a place that should be the province of your friends' regard (or, as in my case, neighborly strangers' regard). Congratulations!
