Again with the documentation ("it's just not done" is not documentation). And the name.
Both Vairavi and Lakshmi have done a GREAT deal of research on Indian clothing (and everything else), and if you ask nicely, I bet they'd be happy to provide you with their documentation.
Please refer to this image, this image, and dozens of other images from pre-, post-, and period Indian art. However I will say, in the interest of full disclosure, that to be perfectly true to my persona of a 13th century woman from the Southernmost regions, I shouldn't really be wearing any choli at all. Stupid modern American modesty!
You stated "It violates all historical and contemporary subcontinental principles of modesty", and I was illustrating that no, it doesn't. I was not even remotely claiming that wearing a backless choli was appropriate for a Dravidian costume, in fact, I specifically stated that it most decidedly was not. Next time I suggest that you a) read for comprehension, and b) do some research beyond what your modern Indian music instructors tell you before attacking people with your post-Mughal, post-Victorian knowledge of Indian morality and values.
I am sorry you're getting this dishonorable coward's crap in a place that should be the province of your friends' regard (or, as in my case, neighborly strangers' regard). Congratulations!
Khan? With your name and skullcap, you can't be expected to be able to speak about non-mughal influenced northern traditions, especially since this woman claims "Southernmost", i.e. Dravidian culture!

Wow - are you actually silly enough to believe that my
screen name
has anything to do with my
actual
ethnicity or areas of study?
The skullcap is no reflection of my ethnicity either - a friend brought it back from Bukhara.
Oh my gosh. I do hope that you are not involved in the SCA in any way. I find your behavior to be....less than appropriate.
(Although I suppose that I should be wishing you'd come and play and learn a bit more.)
A more global comment: this kind of attitude (snarkiness?) is what I'd like to see leave the SCA altogether. I haven't seen any positive aspect of garb/persona snark. How do we, as a group, stop this? It's all fun and games to have a quiet "oh dear" moment to oneself as yet another cleavage pirate wench with fairy wings walks by, but it's another thing entirely to be creating an environment that is so unwelcoming.
Everyone enjoys a different aspect of playing. And our level of commitment changes as we go. I started the year of Pennsic XXX and I'm only just now becoming interested in researching a persona and specific garb.
This person isn't really in the SCA, but he does seem to be weirdly obsessed with people who are, stalking them thru LJ and trolling them. He seems to like kicking up a hornet's nest, so I strongly advise not taking the bait (and disallowing anonymous comments). He is in no way representative of the SCA or anyone in it, so please don't let it affect your own enthusiasm!
There's a world of difference between writing "I'm really interested in the documentation for that" and "Gross!" Even if that's what the person is thinking.
Screening sounds like a good idea. Pity the poster didn't have the courage of his/her convictions and sign their name. Any name.
Since msmemory's post was in celebration of Miss V, and not intended to be an invitation to the anonymous/cowardly dickhead, I'll add a comment on the topic:
Vairavi's scrupulous and rigorous documentation earned her the Maunche as surely as her intelligence, skill, and boundless generosity did. If court attendees had been invited to speak in support of Maunche candidates then a hundred people in the hall would have stood up simultaneously in response to her name. In short, as others have repeatedly and correctly said of the East Kingdom's newest Maunche,
