Vanity
Leetle bitty steps. A month ago I sent in paperwork and payment for a vanity license plate "PELICN".* I haven't heard anything - I'd expected to get an acceptance note from the RMV by now - so I just went and checked. PELICN is not available. Assuming nobody else applied for the same plate in the last four weeks, it looks like it's been assigned to me and I just have to wait for the plates to be manufactured.
*It's PELICN not PELICAN because there's a 6-character limit in Mass.

California offers seven letters. Their DMV was confused why the first day there were ten requests for "NCC 1701". Quote "Why would someone want that?"

By actual prisoners, even!
(Apparently FRET is available — no longer of interest to me, but someone should take it!)

RI has long used an XX-999 format, but recently they've switched to a 799-999 format: 6 digits, always starting with a 7. I like my plate (XN-913) and Beth is very attached to her WB-466 (which she's had forever). We're afraid that when we renew, we'll get switched. We're thinking of applying for vanity plates, and then requesting XN-913 and WB-466. The alternate is to get a "real" vanity number: I'm considering AG-WING (on an old suggestion by Johannes von Narrenstein). Beth hasn't decided, since HOBBIT and HOBBITT are apparently taken...
Hey, I certainly remember Taran, the founding Steward of House Silverwing. We had our differences, to be sure, but I'll always be inspired by his adamantine constancy. The man stood by his beliefs.
