Wouldn't you think if I emailed the headquarters of the gubernatorial candidate on Friday to request a lawn sign, that I'd either have a sign, or a return email about it, by now? I know my candidate holds a significant lead in the polls, but do they think he doesn't need more visible support?

They might. Remember that candidates get to keep any left-over campaign funds raised after the election is over.

During the 2004 campaign, I stopped off at John Kerry's campaign office in Boston to get a sign. I kind of expected they'd have a "help yourself" pile, but instead it took a staffer something like 5 minutes to find me one.

The Arlington office was advertising that they had some to give away. The office is on Summer Street, in the former Muzzey used car dealership.

(Used cars to politico's - not a huge improvement for the neighborhood property values, eh?)

Most campaigns, even big, well funded ones, are woe-fully understaffed, and to combat that problem they staff partly with volunteers. And, as you may have heard, you get what you pay for.

I would try calling them. It may also be possible that they're out of signs - many campaigns have xx number printed at the start and when they're gone they're gone.

Or you have to buy them if you haven't contributed a sufficent amount to the campaign.

Look to see if they have a website you can get them from.

I found the idea of having to do all the work to support my candidate -- like drive to San Fran to get the lawn signs if I didn't buy them from the website, because the office in Sac wasn't allowed to give them out -- almost enough to not do the support.

Try contacting the Town Committee for the Party. They usually have signs.
