Quoted in the New York Times:
“I really do not understand why anybody would want to go anywhere,” Bill Threlkeld wrote. “Stay home. Read a book. Tend your garden. Make love. Drink wine. But most of all — stay home.”

Suits me. I'm dreading the flights to my brother-in-law's wedding in September. Not because I'm afraid of flying. I'm sulky that I can't take my water bottle on a 4+ hour flight, and probably should forego the iPod as well. I'd much rather spend my vacation sitting on the deck here with a cold Chardonnay, in fact.

Why travel? To broaden my horizons, my mind. To see things in person I've only seen in pictures. To meet new people, to expand my knowledge of culture. To make change.

That said, I would be angry about not being able to bring water on board. Right now, it sounds as if once you're past security at Heathrow, you can purchase things to bring on board with you unless you're flying to the US: in that case, no liquids of any sort: water, perfume, toothpaste, etc. *sigh*

I do want these draconian measures, which really don't do much of anything to keep us safe, lifted very, very soon. Of course, I resent having to take off my shoes in US airports -- as if that really does anything to make us safe. :(

Water, water...

Are they at least providing water on-board?

The iPod thing (and other electronics) is just plain dumb. You can turn those on and see that they work. The rest, well ... sheesh. (And my spouse and I are planning on going to London in the spring of next year, too ...)

One of the articles in the Globe today said that they were considering even *more* draconian measures like no bottled beverages even once you're passed security. I wonder what they'll do when they start having lots of dehydrated passengers...

My real concern on both a selfish and a sympathetic issue is the mother of the toddler or baby who cannot have a sippy bottle on flight any longer. They are going to be at the mercy of the flight attendant bring them something to fill a bottle or sippy cup with. Children's patience levels are not compliant with sanity for such things.

I think in 5 years we shall have to wear approved flight 'Johnny's and check our clothes as well undeneath.

Amen, sister.
But a family wedding is a "must". *sigh* All the women in LAX getting upset because their makeup is getting dumped...I see their point, the stuff is expensive. But I also think that blowing up in midair because of someone else's (phony) make-up kit would be far more inconviencing.

Think I'll go home, tend the garden and drink a glass of cold chardonnay in your honor.
