Settling Mother's estate is proceeding with stately decorum, but moving steadily forward.

Saturday I went down to Connecticut to accomplish a number of errands on the project. I went to the BOA branch nearest her apartment, and closed out the contract on her safe deposit box, bringing its contents back north with me for transfer to our box. Most of its contents were paper, but there were also two diamond rings of my grandmother (Nana)'s. Perhaps I will wear one of them from time to time, or have the stones reset. And I'm unconvinced that Daddy's Navy discharge needs to be kept in the bank vault...

From there I went to People's Bank - they've moved the Brookside branch inside the supermarket, but it's still the same plaza. I closed out all her accounts there, and had the funds converted to a cashier's check, which I will put in the Estate Of account I set up. That should pay for her outstanding bills plus the charitable bequests from her will.

As I was leaving the second bank, my phone rang with a call from Patty R., who is buying Mother's car. Unfortunately, the car didn't start when we were taking it for a test drive, so AAA had to come and give it a jump; the test drive consisted of taking it up a couple exits to the dealership. The battery was run down from lack of use, but the car is less than a year old, so the warranty covers its replacement. Yay! Patty's husband Mike will pick it up today and they will take it to be registered. They gave me a check which will be covered at the end of the week, then that will be all set too.

The last errand of the day didn't work out -- I wanted to drop off the unfinished quilt Mother had been commissioned to complete for Ruth H., but she wasn't home. I also hoped to drop off Mother's church keys with the parish administrator, Ruth's brother Bill, but the office was closed that late in the day. So I will ship both the quilt and the keys, no biggie, I had just hoped to cross them off my checklist.

Forward progress. I won't finish it all at once, but if I keep moving forward, it'll get there.

Your Mother quilted? That's so cool! I keep having to patch my Mom and grandparents' quilts. Not that I mind, but I'd rather be finishing my own wedding quilt. ;)

Oh, yeah. Next time you're over, check out the bedrooms -- both beds are covered by two of our favorite quilts from her mother. Both are really lovely pieces...

Thank you for sharing these records. It is borne in upon me that I'll have to be doing the same someday (may it be many years yet, but still...), and not everything is covered in the "Executing for Dummies" books.

And I agree about your Dad's discharge :-)

There are several "Executing for Dummies" books on Amazon. No, not actually in the Dummies series, but there are textbooks available. Meantime I'm just muddling along in the right direction. I think the next thing, once I finish passing papers on the car, is to create the Property Inventory list for the probate court (not as bad as it sounds, since Mother had no real estate and very little investments). Then there will be tax returns.

Man. So many little details. I suppose I'll be there someday.

Doing great
