Great Northeasterners

GNEW was hot. Really hot. I am not adapted to heat any more. When I was a child, my family got along perfectly well just by loafing around in the shade, and putting a fan in one window upstairs to draw a breeze through the house. Now, the moment I try to do anything (shop, cook, sleep) without my air conditioning, I'm unhappy. There are definitely more Roman clothes - chiton/stola etc. - in my future. Sleeveless wins over fitted long sleeved, even if Roman is not my period. Maybe I should become nocturnal?

Good stuff happened on the battlefield: [livejournal.com profile] jducoeur qualified in Sword & Shield ("generic heavy list") and in Combat Archery. This will be the first Pennsic he has fought in since we have known each other, 20 years. Parts of his kit date back to before then, when he was first pursuing fighting. I'm very proud of him, and eagerly look forward to presenting him with a favor to wear on the field. (Rashly, I've also offered him a tabard, but doubt that will be ready for this war.)

Good stuff also happened in Court, including Maunches for two of my friends and a Crescent for another. But I thought there was going to have been a second, particular, Crescent. Grumph. I hope the winter Crown takes care of that.

Awhile ago, I made a casual (stammered, unrehearsed) but heartfelt invitation to someone to be a protegee. We spoke all too briefly this weekend, but she is still thinking about it. I am pleased and flattered: I hold her in high esteem and am not entirely sure she needs any mentoring to advance steadily toward the peerage. Whether or not she accepts my invitation, I think she has/will have a positive impact on her household and kingdom, and am glad to call her friend. (Not naming her here until/unless she accepts.)

Ordered yet another dress from Thorny Rose on Saturday night. She's got my number: the display model of her new side-laced Italian style was in tones of dark red brocade, in my size. She'll hem it for me and have it ready for Pennsic.

Justin and I were wandering around on Saturday night, looking for a party or friends or other moderate mischief, when we ran into much of the rest of our camping group on the road, all headed to Duchess Katherine's and Mistress Carolyn's combined birthday party. We went along, and had a very pleasant time involving many bards, Katherine herself singing "'I'm a Duke And You're Not", birthday cake, and champagne. Nikolai has an amusing device nicknamed the bottle-go-round that holds six liquor bottles and dispenses from them on demand, a measured shot at a time. After things broke up there, we visited the Bree group and chatted with them til I fell asleep in my chair. (oops)

Well, no. Graceful eloquence isn't something that comes naturally to me.

does it come naturally to anyone really? this is why most people sound better in writing :)

Heralds. Yeah. We're, umm, always... err (what's that word?) Eloquent. :-)

I heard that one as:
"Some people have a way with words, and some people, um, thingy."

[identity profile] msmemory.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Me do better as herald because heralds have scripts: "The Crown invites into their court...", "Arm and stand ready" and so on.

Well, attending the next internal-letter-of-intent meeting would probably be good... I think it'll be at my house in Septemberish.

Where do you camp at the war?

[identity profile] msmemory.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
At GNEW we camped with Casa Moomba ([livejournal.com profile] new_man, [livejournal.com profile] mermaidlady, [livejournal.com profile] tpau, et al.). At Pennsic we camp with Lochleven (including [livejournal.com profile] knobhdy, [livejournal.com profile] dkapell, others) up in E18.

Lochleven!

(The SCA group I never met during my more active years in the SCA but which has a lot of members in the LARP I later joined... went to an SCA event after a year or more of going to LARP events and said "boy... there's a lot of familiar people I don't ever remember seeing/noticing at an _SCA_ event before...")

Anyways... when you see Lochleven (love those plaids!) can you tell them Alice/Be Find/Bebhinn says hi? Some of them will know who you mean and be happy :)

Well, it's probably not entirely you -- the Lochleven folks have been getting steadily more active in the SCA over the years. Time was when one mostly encountered the Village at Pennsic, but they've become an important component of the Kingdom more generally over time...

True... I did get the impression that many of them were making the transition to less Realms, more SCA about the time I was doing the opposite.

YAY for Justin! :) sweet. :)

Sounds like everyone had a pretty durned good time, despite the heat. Grats to Justin on joining we CA community, hope to be able to join him and so many others on the field at 100 Minutes War, when my new health insurance kicks in again (barring requests from Crown for scrollwork).

I have one small question though...
Did, um... "it" happen? ;)
