Books

Finished: The Hallowed Hunt, by Lois McMaster Bujold. Second half much more engrossing than the first - setup took too long.

Not finished, probably not going to: Finders Keepers, by Linnea Sinclair. From the cover art, I expected another Woman Renegade Space Marine (she looks like a cross between Starbuck and Tasha Yar), but as soon as she lays eyes on a Maaaan she gets all mushy and hormonal. Yeesh. And I'm sure I can guess than his shadowy background means he will turn out to be the scion of the Big Bad, but have a heart of gold and sweep her off her feet. I don't mind space rangers with sex lives, but this is Series Romance with the names changed - she could just as easily be a long-haul trucker who finds our hero on the roadside in the Rocky Mountains. Yeesh again.

Bleh, I'll steer clear of Finders Keepers then. I read enough of those series romance novels when I was a kid to last me a lifetime. I'm working on The Curse of Chalion right now, have you read/did you like it? So far, I'm into it, but other priorities have kept me from picking it up for a few days.

I liked The Curse of Chalion, though as it happened I liked book 2 best: Paladin of Souls. No, they're not a series in the ordinary sense: each book has its own protagonist, but they share a world.

Series romance have their place. I still pick up Signet Regencies from time to time, but I have no need ever to read another plain Harlequin.
