I feel his pain

Poor Ateno. He just inadvertently squooshed the subscription lists together for the Maunche discussion and the Silver Crescent discussion lists. He's going to have a much rougher time detaching them than I had on 2/14 explaining the whole Announcements list "unsub" false alarm.

I think [livejournal.com profile] siderea is right: I need to create a hardcopy or off-machine backup snapshot of my list subscribers, just in case of another crisis.

Yes, that would be wise, not that I mind reading about artsy stuff.

There's this wonderful thing called a "version control system". A decent version control system will prevent you ever overwriting the prior state of a file irrevocably. And while the free ones are generally command-line tools, you've never struck me as the sort of person who'd be daunted by that. (Hmm. Actually, it looks like you might not have to: some nice people have put a windows wrapper around RCS, and are giving it away free for individual use: http://www.componentsoftware.com/csrcs/.) Of course, a version control system residing on your local machine is no use if you don't also do regular backups....
