Augmentation

Blush. People are saying the nicest things about my work :) I love it, but it's embarrassing.

So what shall I use to augment my arms? The Crown did not specify, so I believe I get to choose and submit the modification myself. (Hm, probably get to pay for it myself too.)

Not doing this with a poll, just opening discussion. I could have what I think of as the default thing, a (metal) canton charged with a blue tyger passant, the badge of the people of the East. This tyger could be plain, or he could be bearing something - a shepherd's crook, since I am Shepherd's Crook Herald? or some totem of Thorvald and Svava who gave me the right to augment?

Someone on the East list suggested I charge the canton with Hebrew letters, but given my arms (see icon) I think that's not a good idea.

What else am I missing that I might like better?

Or I could charge the canton with an Eastern Crown, or the Arms of the East, but that seems presumptuous. Besides, Eastern Crowns are usually drawn in gold, and I'd need a gold or silver canton for contrast, so would have to make the crown colored. (Not to mention whether it would be stepping on the toes of the Eastern Crown Herald, my colleague.) And if I am interpreting the rules correctly, I can't use a crown alone on a canton as it's reserved for Royalty.

If I plunk the blue tyger on the vertex of the cross which is my principal charge, then I have Too Many Layers. Heck, I had the Layers argument the first time I submitted these arms, because of the fretty field and the bordure. Unless one gets a waiver from the Layers rule for an augmentation, which I infer to be the case.

If I use a blue tyger, I'd need permission from the Crown or Kingdom Seneschal - but that shouldn't be hard to get. (Precedent: Da'ud, 9/95)

Thinking aloud...

I'd lean away from the Eastern Crown or Kingdom Arms -- regardless of whether you could get away with it, it's too easy to impute presumption to it.

The Layers issue aside, I think a charged canton will work better than putting something into the middle. You want the cross to still be clear and distinctive -- it's Your Charge, and better to keep that recognizeable. A canton would still leave that pretty clear.

The book idea is interesting -- not quite as distinctively an augmentation as the tyger, but easier to draw. I still like the idea of working the shepherd's crook in there somewhere, though...
