29. Rediscovery. Marion Zimmer Bradley and Mercedes Lackey.
Mediocre book about the Terrans' second landing on Cottman IV. A few strong scenes connected by lame dialogue and dull scenes. Throughout, I had the feeling that MZB and ML were carefully setting up the known later pieces of the Darkover series, such as Margali's background. They didn't have a new story to tell, which was a shame.

Luckily, I bought it second-hand, so didn't waste much money on it.

so true

I was very disappointed by that book as so many others in the series were phenominal. It was, however, written during the first of MZB's major illnesses leading to her sad demise.

I didn't check the publication order - was this the first of the MZB "with" books of the Darkover series?

Possibly worked from her backstory notes? I suppose I can't fault writers for using them, but sometimes a story seems so clearly a barely fleshed out outline that I wish they'd hide the notes, write the story, and then LATER use the notes to fill in anything they missed. Ah, well.

Do you ever go to Darkover in Baltimore? (Or does anyone else we know?)

I only have once, but I've never read the books, I was going for social reasons. So I didn't really attend any activities or get the significance. I've considered going back (preferably after reading at least one of the books) but I'm not sure anyone I know goes anymore. The group I used to know erupted in Drama one Darkover that sadly caused most of them to stop.

We've gone several times, but not lately. Always had a good time when we did go, but gradually developed other things to do on Thanksgiving weekend.

Fond memories -- Darkover is where I first learned to play Poker. And may be where we originally discovered Clam Chowder. One of these years we'll get back there...

I went for the first time last year, and I'm hoping to get there again this year. With Clam Chowder playing I've got a much better chance of talking [livejournal.com profile] violet_amy into going :)
