R.I.P. Julia

There are some French recipes for which I can hear her voice, still, giving the directions.

I mourn in ways one cannot imagine.

My family life as a child was, well, interesting. Everyone's is, I suppose (and yet, because of that, not so interesting. But I digress.)

Julia Child (and Graham Kerr, for that matter) showed me someone who was having fun at home, and fun in the kitchen. For whom mistakes and failures were things to take in stride, and learn from. That anyone could learn to do extraordinary things, in simple ways, with care and modest effort.

I could have learned these lessons a thousand ways, I suppose. But I shall not easily forget learning them, in great part, from Mrs Child.

In my childish heart, there is a kindly place, peopled with folks like Fred Rogers and entertained by Fred Astaire. Tonight, they'll be eating much better there.... (:-)

I made a point of going to see her kitchen at the Smithsonian when I was in DC.
