I finished that a few weeks ago myself and I'm just about to start 'The Subtle Knife' now (I'd have done that and finished it already but I had a windfall of unexpected copies of 'Destiny' and 'Requiem for the Sun' by Elizabeth Haydon and took time out to devour those)
_Very_ interesting book recommended at about the same time but independantly to me by kr1mz0n_ghoti and tim_
It's an awesome book but I warn you the next two books go downhill severely and may leave you bitter about that series. If you haven't read Pullman's "Ruby in the Smoke" I strongly suggest it.
Hmmm... part of why I chose The Golden Compass was that I had enjoyed The Ruby in the Smoke. However, I thought book 2 of the Sally Lockhart set also went way downhill; I didn't even finish it.

Date: 2004-07-16 09:06 am (UTC)I like the Golden Compass, but more in a it was a cool concept and cool story to a 13/14 year-old me than actually being a good book.
I got Ruby in the Smoke for Christmas one year, and liked it, but never go around to reading the sequels
