14. The Cold Equations, by Tom Godwin.
(Hi [livejournal.com profile] tiellan!) More noble heroic brilliant (white, American) males.
Actually turned in 6/15 but I'm behind on LJ again.

Edit: To those of you (below) who've asked -- it's an anthology of Godwin stories, the centerpiece of which is the tragic story you're thinking of.

I know a "The Cold Equations" which is a short story. Is this that?

That's the title of a classic SF short story. Pretty grim.

That story always stuck in my mind.

Let me see if I can ask without revealing spoilers: stowaway on a spacecraft? If so, thanks -- I've heard of the story but didn't have an author and didn't know where it was anthologized. I'd like to read it.

Yes, that's the one.
The anthology will be out from Baen in late summer/early fall.

It's been anthologized a *lot*. Far and away the most popular/famous story the author wrote. But then, I've got a particular sub-hobby of collecting "best of" collections, so I naturally tend to see the good stories show up in multiple books :-)
