8. The Ruby in the Smoke. Philip Pullman.
YA mystery set in Victorian London. I wouldn't have noticed it was YA except for the vocabulary: somewhere about 2/3 through, I noticed that there were no really exotic words for the ships and other tangible goods.
(The reason I'm only on #8 is that I didn't count the last ms. I read for work, because I had read it before. And I have, as usual, several other partly-finished books lying about, and have been "vacationing" by rereading some old friends. My book count is just new-to-me books.)
