Keeping shallots

If you peel garlic cloves, you can keep them for a long time in a jar full of sherry. Is there a comparable technique for shallots? Can I make up a jarful of either whole or chopped shallots to have on hand?

Chop them and freeze them in a heavyweight ziploc.
