This.

But color me guilty. While I was appalled to see Christmas decorations out already -- in my view, Columbus Day is premature! -- I did buy a silly polarbear-and-penguin thing, for the next Stars of the Arctic Allstate Banquet. But I feel bad for encouraging the shop to sell Christmas things when it's barely back-to-school in these parts.

We noticed this weekend that our local Waitrose (British supermarket chain) already has a big mince pie and Christmas-related chocolate aisle set up. It's still September. *sigh*

I started planning for Pennsic last night. It is 7 months further away.

It's still too early for Halloween.

I have been saying for well over a decade that 'Christmas does not start until after Halloween'.

As a small business owner who expects a big bump in sales for the holidays, I'm now looking at this and sort of wishing I'd never said it.

That said? Even now, Christmas does not start until after Halloween (though my prep for Christmas certainly does!).

Personally, I don't believe that Christmas starts until December 25th at 12:00:01, but if you want to make a "season" out of it it shouldn't start until Thanksgiving is over. When I was in CA, Nordstrom's made a point of putting a sign outside of their stores explaining why they didn't decorate for Christmas - they believe in celebrating one holiday at a time. I can respect that.

I've gone into various retail establishments before and told them that Labor Day is too early, and I'll consider patronizing them again in January and not before.
