OES Marathon: Day 3

Monday was the consolidation. The mood was solemn, bordering on somber. Only 8 people from the consolidating chapter showed up, which I suppose is evidence of why they couldn't sustain as an independent chapter. Poor things. Consolidation is a pretty short ceremony, and since it was a special meeting there was no other business. Out of the chapter room by 9:15, home at 11.

Tuesday was a reception for the Grand Warder, Grand Electa, and one pair of deputies. As usual in that building, the receiving line went out the preparation door, all through the lobby and curved back in a dozen people in through the chapter door. We mused that it might've been more efficient to have swapped who was in the receiving line and who went through it. Fortunately, it's becoming quite fashionable to make very brief remarks, so we were done by 10 and through the collation line by 10:30, home at 11:30.

Last night was School of Instruction. It went quite smoothly, but took forever - three hours and even at that the officers were doing abbreviated versions of their lines. Home at 12.

Tonight I've decided to blow off the reception and stay home with my sweetie. Deb and I couldn't carpool anyway, since one of her chapters has its stated meeting tonight, and I'm not excited to drive more than an hour each way again for the fourth night in a row.

Our school of instruction is always a weekend morning gig, followed by a pot luck or luncheon. Then everyone who is not a line officer gets to go home.

It's actually lots of fun. The two districts I'm a member of do them a little differently, but frankly I can't imagine doing one at night.

We have four schools of instruction in June: two on weekday evenings, two on weekend days, spread across the state. We go through the whole standard Work - opening, introductions, flag, balloting, initiation, closing. Us deputies are expected to attend at least two - as it happens, what with my college reunion and SCA stuff, I'm going to both of the evening schools.

You have one per district? But you have so many more chapters than we do, so that makes sense.
