The virtues of speaking up

So I reiterated in [livejournal.com profile] baronernst's LJ yesterday that I am looking for more chances to work on my court heraldry skills. Lo, at baronial council last night [livejournal.com profile] jdulac had brought the Burdened Tyger scrolls* for [livejournal.com profile] elizabear and [livejournal.com profile] dsrtao. DSR couldn't really read his own scroll, so I got to read it. Cold. (ack! and oops!) I only flubbed a little bit, confused by [livejournal.com profile] lisagw's hand.

It was an unexpected pleasure to get to read their scrolls. But boy-howdy do I need more work on that skill. I breathed in some poorly chosen places, and wish I'd gotten to preview the text (which of course I would have, in a real court).

*Siamese twin scrolls - both in the same style and on the same sheet of paper, but separate and individualized texts for them.

I can help teach this skill. I was good at it before, and I am just finishing a series of voice lessons that are focused on breathing, tone and phrasing.

I would be interested in this, too, if you are willing to do some teaching.

Always and any time.

Excellent. When can I set up you to teach that at an SCA event, asks the new Elmet Herald. . . .

When we can reliably get my buttocks to an SCA event. Sigh, damnit, etcetera.

In the mean time, I'll help anyone nearby, on weeknight. :-)

We were very pleased, though. Thank you!

I thought you did a terrific job, and I was pleased we could give you the opportunity to practice. I looked at the scroll after and went "Wah? She read that cold? eep!" Once I got the key to the hand I could read it, but it took me longer than it did you. Also, the hand didn't follow modern line-break conventions, which makes it harder to read aloud unless you've previewed it. So - great work!

I thought you read them quite well. Those tall 's's can throw anyone for a loop.

(Wait a sec - was it your art rather than Lisa's?)

[identity profile] lanome.livejournal.com 2009-02-03 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
No, no. It definitely wasn't mine. I would have remembered.

I just know a thing or two about tall 's's, also that [livejournal.com profile] lisagw likes ascenders.

I was impressed. Cold readings are hard.

Most of the people in the room didn't hear any flubs. You did fine!
