Death of LiveJournal predicted! Doom and destruction!

I suppose folks are correct that I should back up my LJ somewhere, especially some things I put there so I could find them later (like recipes). Maybe I can get my resident IT department to do it for me, while he's doing his own.

I've got all my postings backed up into an XML file, which was easy enough (it's a feature of one of the clients I use). What that doesn't save, though, is all the comments in response to those, and the comments I've left in other people's journals. Without the interplay, it all seems rather flat. (But at least my stuffing recipe, which only was written down in a post, is safe. :) )

Wait, what? Where?

The Russian company that owns LJ fired a large percentage of the staff today, letting them know they have until the end of the week, no severance, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Can you share the source? It is obviously not a source I am reading - and obviously one I should.

In addition to the valleywag site, I saw this

Wow, they certainly didn't have anything nice to say about LJ or its users.

Well , looks like I'll be researching a backup utility right quick.

I have used LJ Book in the past (makes PDFs), but haven't backed up this year. Amusingly, the site is so overwhelmed it has not yet come up for me yet.

Time to run LJBook again, I guess.

Hmm... Can't seem to access the page at the moment...

Yeah, ljbook is wildly overwhelmed at the moment, but I've used it in the past and liked it because it preserved comment threads. I will also be contacting my resident IT department ;)

If you hadn't posted this, I would have had no idea what was going on. Thanks.

I use LJArchive regularly and find that it does most, but not all, of what I want. I gets entries and comments, which is the important stuff, but loses tags, custom security groups, and commenter userpics. And sometimes pictures stored at LJ, I think. It also has no knowledge of memories, so I've got no easy way to go through and grab other people's posts that I wanted to keep.

My install is on my laptop, which probably isn't what you want. You should decide if you prefer to have it on the desktop or your laptop: getting it up and running should be easy enough either way...
