I intend to spend all of next week doing exactly what I please.

This includes reading, tidying our home office, shopping both the pre- and post-Christmas sales, watching the birds at the feeder, restarting a workout scheme, sorting the sewing supplies, maybe a little brewing, making a Christmas Eve dinner, catching a movie or two, all that.

I haven't had a vacation that wasn't attached to either paid or volunteer work (conferences, Pennsic, OES) in a year and it shows.

There are a number of really fun day-trips that one can take, as well. Robin and I are both quite fond of Newport RI or Portsmouth NH for fun, and dining out, and still home by bed-time. :-)

Also, Mystic CT, and other fun places...

Justin and I have been thinking of doing one or two of those too. Any specific recommendations of shops or restaurants to inform our destination?

Newport? Not so much. I like going there, but there is nothing that I find superbly attractive. We make a habit of going to Newport Vineyards (which has great wine and one of my favorite ports EVER) but the winery tour is less interesting in December. :-) For those trips, my attraction is time in the car with Robin, actually. For equivalent recreation (if one is skipping the winery), it is very Faneiul Hall-ish.

Robin and I went to Portsmouth this summer for our brief "honeymoon". I talked about it here.

It is a place we want to go back to, very much.

We also like Rockport and Bear Neck for day trips and antiquing. Again, no specific destination there, and we keep trying restaurants and liking them all, without falling in love with any of them.

Ooooh, for Mystic, consider Gillete Castle, which is seasonally closed during winter EXCEPT for a fantastic Christmas exhibit.

Not far from there is a train exhibit: I've wanted to try their dinner and travel car experience, but haven't yet.

Oh, I haven't been to Gillette Castle or on the steam trains since I was a little girl!

And if you get only 1/2 of that done -- so much the better.

ENJOY!!!
