Academy awards - actors & actresses

I wonder how they matched up the spokespeople to the nominees. Did the spokespeople ask to represent the nominees? Were the nominees allowed to express a preference? Was ad-libbing permitted (yeah, they're actors, but several of them sounded extemporaneous.)?
