I'm not much into following politics, I admit (to the presumed chagrin of my MIL, who is fascinated by them). But here I am, just having lent my name to the list of supporters for the hot political football of my new town.

Burlington's town election will be in two weeks, and the much contested ballot question is whether to rezone the area around the green and in the "central business district" (i.e. where the supermarket and Dunkin's are), so as to encourage the growth of a Town Center, with a variety of small shops, restaurants, etc. They're envisioning something like the centers of Winchester, Stoneham, Concord, or Wellesley, with good pedestrian access and a mix of business with some apartments/townhouses. As a former resident of Waltham & Wellesley, and having worked in Winchester center, I think it's an excellent idea. I'd like to see some little artsy shops, and clothing stores, and ethnic restaurants, and a cleaner's, a hairdresser's, etc. (And even if-when the Overlay District passes, the growth won't happen unless some entrepreneurs push it, there's not going to be some kind of sudden destruction of the current buildings in the zone.)

Crossing my fingers. And even considering (gasp!) a lawn sign.
