How long does skunk scent persist outdoors? Since I can still smell skunk and it's been a week (including a rainstorm) should I conclude there's a critter corpse out there I need to track down and bag up for the trash collectors?

Oh you are lucky in a way

Actually if it is a persistent skunk smell... it is not a skunk. You have been claimed by ... wait for it... FOXES!

You foxes smell like skunks. well their markings anyway. They go and mark up your area.. and whallah... persistant skunk. People dont thik of them as having heavy nasty musk... but they do.

i learned this many years ago at the squam lake science center up in the white mountains. Walk past their habitat and you would swear its just full of grouchy mad skunks. Then the nature person explain it, and it explained many many things at my old house.

My daughter said they smell the same over in Europe too when she visited an alpine zoo in the mountains of germany.

No wonder they use dogs.. Can follow that scent anywhere... but also no wonder they can leave it so well.
