Maybe someday when I'm really feeling like stirring the waters, I'll impose an ACTUAL FIRM DEADLINE for an Eastern Star function. And tell people who reserve after the date that it's sold out. Heh. That would be evil of me.

Meanwhile, two more envelopes and a phone call yesterday. Four by email today. Deadline was printed as 5/23, but allegedly one of my fellow committee members extended it to 5/30. I figure I can probably handle any I get by 6/3 (but we have to give the caterer a hard number on 6/4). Maybe we will get 175 after all - had originally planned on 200.

Back in the dawn of time, when I was master of a lodge, I endured that frustration for a few months, and then came up with a workable solution: a two-tier pricing scheme for dinners. The notice would say, "Dinner $12, discount price for reservation before May 12th, $6". Those cheap old guys, they could jump pretty good for a $6 discount.

Notice that that's exactly the same as saying, "Penalty for late/no reservation, $6" -- but one would have been met with howls and complaints and the other was accepted quite readily.

Don't know if that would work for you.
