It is good to have a dentist where I can get a next-day appointment. One of my newest fillings is bad somehow, and the toothache just won't quit. I'm hoping for "just" a root canal.

Regrettably, I don't think there's anything such as "just" a root canal — when I had a root canal several years ago, it needed a crown afterwards.

Rats! The one crown I already have is in the exact corresponding tooth on the opposite side of my mouth.

I have three crowns all on the same side, two above and one below (opposite one of the ones above). One root canal — the other two crowns were because I broke the teeth.
