Massachusetts Eastern Star

This Saturday night (5/17) I will finally be formally invested in my office as a Deputy Grand Marshal in Eastern Star. The ceremony - which bears a passing resemblance to SCA royal court - is open to the public and I'd be happy to see friends there. (But I gotta warn you, in fairness, if you think the idea of a 4- or 5-hour court is repulsive, you probably don't want to come; wait for some other opportunity, later in the year, to check it out.)

Lowell Memorial Auditorium, Lowell MA. Prelude starts at 6:15, ceremonies really start around 6:30, and will probably conclude some time between 10 and 11 pm.

Gracious! What do you do for 4 hours? Are you the only, er, order of business?

Goodness, no! I'm only one marshal out of about 12, albeit the second-senior one.

General order of proceedings:
Prelude
Welcome speech
Processional of incumbent officers
Prayer
Salute to the flag & national anthem
Short speech by the retiring Worthy Grand Matron of the state; thanks etc.
Outgoing officers process out
Musical interlude while any recycled officers change their outfits [the Eastern Star is all about the clothes, OMG]
Incoming officers process in
Each of 18 officers invested individually in office and escorted to her/his station
Marshals and other deputies invested collectively
Presentation of jewel of rank to newly retired Matron & Patron
New matron and patron, separately, give speeches
Appointment of "cabinet" special committees
Announcements [e.g. lost and found, reception invitations]
Adjourn
Receiving line

You're right, it is just like Court!

More precisely, it is *very* much like Coronation Court...

Congrats! Wish we could be there to applaud you in your deputy grand marshal-ness, they're lucky to have you!
