Gardening plans

Having spring fever pretty bad, I stopped in at the garden center on my lunch hour. I had no idea I was going to have to make so many decisions about my garden plans for this summer. My plan had been to lay gravel over landscaping cloth to make a path in the middle of the fenced garden, from the gate to the existing brick-edged circle in the middle, and put a birdbath or some kind of semi-medieval statue in the center of the circle, surrounded by annuals such as impatiens or pansies.

Gravel comes in colors and textures - and flagstones are also an option. Birdbaths come in sizes and colors, as well as various pedestal designs. Even the flowers come in assorted colors.

Then there are the roses. I'm going to take another stab at roses, presuming that we won't have another year of watering bans. The earliest of the rosebushes are already in, but not the ones I'm waiting for. I suppose I could order them by mail - or wait til the David Austins come in to the store.

I've always liked the flagstones-in-gravel look. Gives you stepping stones if you're in bare feet.

You just reminded me that I want to lay a path into the lily bed this year. I'm torn between birdbath/statue/sundial though.

I'd like to put in a rosebush, but I haven't done any research yet. All that I know for sure is that I want roses that *smell* like roses! I guess that'll be next year. My grandmother and Bob's mother both had roses, so it's pure sentiment for us.

Keep us posted - it'll help keep me motivated.

As far as roses, I'm currently thinking of the William Shakespeare 2000 from David Austin Roses, as recommended last year by [livejournal.com profile] jdulac. If I have luck with those I'll look into others.

A couple of years ago I decided we absolutely needed something to mark the way to the front door and got fake stones made of concrete (from Home Depot), and put them directly in soil. They're heavy as hell, but they haven't cracked and the weathering makes them look pretty decent for something much cheaper than the alternative.

planting diapers in the rood area will help to keep moisture in the area. read to make sire there are no additives in the diapers.

banana peels and fish worked into the soil helps too.

The second part of our recent on-line garden shopping spree arrived today. I planted another cherry tree out front. Morwenna planted the grape vines in the back.

Now we wait ;-)

God, don't you just love springtime? My own personal porn involves laying in bed and browsing through the seed and nursery catalogs.
Your plans sound lovely - got pictures?
