Grr. I hate composing a reply to someone on my f-list, hitting "send," and then discovering that I am not on their friends list and they've disabled non-friend posting altogether. OK, what I wrote wasn't earth-shattering or fantastically elegant, but it still feels like I've just been told "La, la, la, not listening!!"

If you don't want non-friends posting, be polite and make your journal friends only (for reading).

Yeah, that can be annoying. I understand that sometimes there's a need to restrict unmoderated comments, but screening seems the right tool for the job there -- it introduces a delay but not an outright prohibition.

And if the UI isn't making it clear before you spend time composing your reply that it won't be accepted, that sounds like a deficiency that would be worth reporting.

In this case, the UI was clear that the user in question only would accept comments from her friends, but I was surprised to discover that although she's someone I know IRL, she hadn't friended me. I suppose I should've opened another tab to check, but it hadn't occurred to me til my posting failed that I wasn't on her list.
