Hey, what kind of freelance do you do? I've been thinking about various sorts of freelancing and trying to figure out what I'd be suited for.

I proofread fiction. Marking misplaced hyphens, mismatched quotation marks, spell-check-o's, that sort of thing. It doesn't pay all that well, but often the books are things I enjoy reading anyway.

Oh man, so not my kind of freelancing. I was thinking about book indexing, and perhaps someday QuestionPoint contracting. Oh, and apparently somebody at a neighbor school needs some acquisitions work done on a pile of Russian childrens' books, and that would be good for me.

I'd enjoy that too, it sounds like fun. I'm going to try to get jobs in math publishing over the summer if I don't get an actuarial job that starts early in summer.

This is the sort of thing I would *love* to do. What sort of qualifications does it require? Do you have a standard style manual to refer to, or is it all up to you to already know? How tight are the deadlines? If (and only if) there is more work than you can handle, I might be grateful for a hookup at some point. Hope you don't mind me asking, and please feel free to ignore if I have offended you! :)

No offense taken :) So far, I've had a shortage of work rather than an excess, but I'll keep you in mind.

I use the Chicago Manual of Style as a reference, together with a style sheet furnished by the publisher with certain quirks of the house, and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

Deadlines tend to be moderate - 2 weeks is typical - but firm.
