So I discovered that I can still ftp to my World account, even if I can't telnet in. Went in and grabbed everything from my main directory other than the mailspool. I'll still be peeved if I can't scoop up the mail before I close the account, but at least I've got the other stuff.

I'm about to join the "not any mores." I've had the account since 1992, and it's been nice having an email address that stayed stable that long, but their policies have been driving me nuts (they filter for spam -- according to THEIR OWN criteria [one of which is "comes from attbi.com"] -- which cannot be reset by the user) and they've had too much unscheduled down time lately.
I wouldn't have minded this particular instance, if they had messaged their users on Friday with the same text you found, which apparently only GUI users got to see, not us old-fashioned shell accounts. I'm sick of it. I'll keep my $200/yr for something else. (GRRRR.)
I hope to grab my mail, and I hope to actually uns*b my lists subs that go there, but I'm outa there either way.

If you're looking for a replacement shell account, I can recommend my current provider, JTAN. SSH (no telnet), FTP, web space (with CGI), generous disk space, sane people, $99/year. If you sign up using this link I get a small kickback (something like $5?), but that's not why I'm recommending them (and that's also why I made a point of giving the "plain" URL). I've been using them for four years (since my previous provider became unreasonable) and am very satisfied.

As of noon, I couldn't ftp, email, access their website (which was sort of up yesterday), nada. Except their modem talks to my modem. Not very helpful.

The favorite error message runs something like, "None of the known name servers are responding."

It would be convenient to find a workaround to this. At the moment, I don't care about other services, though - I WANT MY EMAIL!
