So very miscellaneous

The camel's head is in the tent: the CEO approved the list of additional responsibilities cooked up by the office manager and me. I believe the theory is that first I'll do the work, then they'll recognize my advancement. In due course I will be office manager for this building in addition to librarian. And I remain conscious that office managers are much more readily employable than librarians, when the time comes to change.

The J. Peterman catalog still exists, and still sells outfits that could've appeared in the days of Bogart or Hepburn. Swoon. I want the "1947 dress," which looks like one of Bunny Watson's from Desk Set. (Besides that, I still want Bunny Watson's job....)

I survived getting my hair cut just like a regular girl. (As in, not just having my husband trim the bottom with sewing scissors, and not lopping off a foot-long braid, just regular wash-and-cut by a stylish salon.) Naturally, it's a smidge shorter than I would've chosen, but that's self-correcting. Maybe next time I'll decide I need color too, but I'm nervous because that's a long-term decision.

Apple season!
Bulb season!

I'm not going to Coronation tomorrow, but this is not a political statement, it's a distance statement. We can't take time off work today, which makes Delaware too dam' far.

In my spare time tonight I need to get together two piles of stuff: the hazardous waste for the town's collection day, and a bit of rummage for the alumnae association.

The new TV season is underinspiring. I dozed off during Journeyman. I'll give Bionic Woman another week or two to make me care about the protagonist more than the antagonist.

I dunno. My kids seem to really like getting buzz cuts. I'm sure you realise that I'm not particularly enchanted by this. I tell them that if they keep cutting their hair eventually it won't grow back - and then I point to my growing bald spot for emphasis.

I *think* they know I'm just kidding. Well, mostly.

If you get Bunny Watson's job, can I be one of the girls who works for her? Not the loud floozy-like one, though.

[identity profile] msmemory.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, you can be the brunette working on "Does the King of the Watsui drive an automobile?" {{grin}}

[identity profile] tashabear.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, thank you -- she's cute!

[identity profile] evil-macaroni.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Apple season? You make me jealous. Of course maybe my local farmer's market will surprise me but I already know that pick-your-own (with any variety) is right out. *pout*

[identity profile] msmemory.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I would've figured California just had different varieties of apple, and/or a different harvest schedule.

[identity profile] evil-macaroni.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
The place (singular) an hour away features red delicious, golden delicious and pippin. *yawn*
Maybe if I wanted to drive 2 hours away there'd be a better selection but at that point it makes more sense just to buy prepicked apples a 10-minute bike ride away. :)
I think most pick-your-own farms specialize in strawberries.
The web site informs me picking begins on date ? in September.

That is a fabulous dress indeed.

I was just thinking about how much I missed J. Peterman as I was going through my closet for the move. My pocketbook may not thank you for pointing this out. But the rest of me will!

Love J. Peterman...

[identity profile] baronessv.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I may have a pattern for a dress very similar to that one. I'm fairly certain Vintage Vogue has done something like it in the past, and I know it's a style I keep my eye out for.
I'll go dig through the pattern box and let you know.

[identity profile] wench33.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I was in no mood for 6 hour drives, so I'm staying home with the kiddo.

I love the J.Peterman catalog too, but there's nothing in there for fat chicks. ;)

[identity profile] new-man.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Um... what? There certainly used to be.

[identity profile] wench33.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
We sued to get it and there wasn't. Perhaps you are thinking of smaller than *me* fat chicks.

that would be

[identity profile] wench33.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
used to..go team typing dyslexia.

[identity profile] new-man.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
While a lot of their tailored stuff wasn't carried above a 16, they used to have a lot of "one size" stuff that would you (or just about anyone).

Re: that would be

[identity profile] wench33.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, I mad loved that catalog, it was full of stuff I would have worn.

Even if it would fit *you* in a womans size..I'm still not quite sure it would fit *me*.

says the barrel chested peasant wench :)

[identity profile] msmemory.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
The 1947 Dress is unusual in that it comes in a 16 (which will fit me). Many of their skirts have, historically, only gone to 12 or 14.

[identity profile] wench33.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm around a 22 now, not one thing in that catalog would fit me.

[identity profile] wench33.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That is a fabulous dress!! You will be stunning in it!

[identity profile] new-man.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I've just encouraged Miss Mina to buy the 1947 dress (and the 1950s shirt).

I dozed off during Journeyman. I'll give Bionic Woman another week or two to make me care about the protagonist more than the antagonist.

Ditto and haven't watched it yet.

1947 Dress

[identity profile] msmemory.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Red, I assume, which is what I will pick too? Or did someone point out there's also a Hot Pink on clearance?

Re: 1947 Dress

[identity profile] new-man.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
No pink for her. Red it is.

[identity profile] jenwrites.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe next time I'll decide I need color too, but I'm nervous because that's a long-term decision.

Not as long-term as it used to be!

I'll give Bionic Woman another week or two to make me care about the protagonist more than the antagonist.

I don't care about both of them equally at this point, alas, but that's got more to do with the wooden acting and dialogue. But TNG also had a terrible premiere, so I'll stick around on the hopes that this too will improve.

[personal profile] jducoeur 2007-10-03 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course, TNG had an almost entirely dreadful first season, so that particular analogy isn't wholly inspiring. I'm midway through a rewatch of the complete series, and while I am once again impressed at how good it was by season 4, it took real effort to force my way through the first one or two.

(OTOH, granted, Farpoint was *monumentally* bad, and they never again quite hit that nadir...)

[identity profile] ramblingmom.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm nothing in that catalog would fit me -- I think I need to lose some weight - that's motivational that is.

Go for it!

[identity profile] ohsusana.livejournal.com 2007-09-28 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Colour away! Woo! I love it! I don't know why I waited 40 years!! And it's not so long term if you get the kind that washes out gradually, instead of growing out and showing 'roots'.

[identity profile] yakshaver.livejournal.com 2007-09-29 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
J. Peterman Swoon.

I just found out a few months ago that he had bought back the rights to his name after the people he sold his company to screwed it up. And immediately bought something that's not going to fit me til I lose at least another fifty pounds off the discontinued section of their website, just so I could get on the mailing list and indulge in the cheap but elegant fantasy of their catalogs.
