In no particular order....

It was hot. And humid. And hotter and humider. Ugh. I remember why we made sure to get Central Air in our new house. But it was hot and humid even to the people who aren't addicted to their creature comforts. It really sucks to take a clean tunic out of a bin and have it feel damp before you even finish getting dressed. (Next time - pack alternate lighter weight bedding: it can stay in a bin if the weather is cool.)

I was, and still am, bummed that I didn't get to use my fledgling heraldic skills all week. I was entirely superfluous and slightly snubbed at the formation of the procession for opening ceremonies. I couldn't help out at Svava's Ladies of the Rose tourney because it conflicted with in-camp prep for a party and royalty dinner. And not having found any way to find Rowen during the week, couldn't volunteer to assist with EK Court. {wistful sigh} Next year, eh?

That said, there were plenty of good points.

Sitting around sociably in camp with Lochleven. Dang, they're good hosts and good people just to be around. I'm glad to get to know them better. This year Lochleven camp felt like home, and not just because I said it in the Welcome Circle. And playing Werewolf. And the day Matilda's husband decided to make cold-water foot baths for all the ladies.

Shopping! Black Swan were out of the short-sleeved Flemish dresses, so I "settled" for another buttoned Herjolfsnes with linen undershift. Also purchased: period shoes!! A linen hood. A cotton sari, not the world's nicest, but pretty close to the cheapest. This year's Lady Tudor Glitz. Silk thread, because I intended to alter the Herjolfsnes so I could wear it right away if it weren't so hot. Got Master Roberto [or his journeyman] to shorten both my studded belts. Hooks for [livejournal.com profile] tpau. Hats for [livejournal.com profile] marysdress. Linen yardage for later. Oddly, no cookbooks.

Wolgemut! I would have missed their Thursday Wolgemutations electrified concert because it was during my dinner-prep scheduled chore, but they were rained out and performed Friday instead, so I was able to be there. They played "Tequila" on period instruments, and "Scottish Bransle" on modern rock instruments, and several other things with various other combinations, covering the whole gamut from harp solos to Led Zeppelin and Queen. Oh so very meta and nonperiod and completely wonderful.

That sucks. Rowan spotted me some time after opening ceremonies with a procession question - namely: what order should the champions process in?
We're going to dig through EK Law and find out what order they were created in.

I can tell you off the top of my head that the eldest are the tournament champions (heavy list) and the newest are the A&S. I speculate, without looking, that it's
Tournament
Bardic
Rapier
Archery
Equestrian
A&S
but I would have to check on those middle ones. Feel free to check my op.eastkingdom.org/Misc/ page for the dates of the first champions of each flavor.

The Misc page shows Archery coming before Rapier, but otherwise you've got them in the right order.

I'll point Rowan there.

Their Majesties decided to arrange Their Champions with Marshalled activities first - Armoured, Rapier, and Archery in that order, then Arts - Bardic, Equestrian, and A&S in that order. Still, it would be good to know; we've never had that many Champions together in one place in my recollection.

You so have an open invitation to be the herald at Rapier Champions. We need them and you would be so awesome.

{blush} When is that? The last one was January '07.

We (the Eastern voice heraldry community) have offered to the event stewards to do list heraldry for Rapier Champions, as we do at Armoured Champions, before but have been told we weren't necessary. It would be nice if we could be helpful with that. - Rowen, Troubadour Herald

Well, I don't know who WE (the Eastern Herald Voice heraldry community) talked to, but I have been asking for years for heralds for Rapier Champs at Pennsic and have been assisted by some very helpful senior heralds such as Steffan and Tibor. But I am sure that you meant King's and Queen's not Pennsic.

Heralds at King's and Queen's would be very nice and often the event steward doesn't think about heraldry with all the other stuff going on. There are several of us working on changing that.

There is a mystique with fencing that we take care of ourselves - I ran into this at Pennsic when trying to get waterbearers - and I think a williness to relook at how we do things would be just the ticket to have everyone have fun.

So, after things settle down, let's talk. I'd like to try and get voice heralds working everywhere I can. War, Champions, wherever. Troubadour(at)EastKingdom(dot)org.

Actually, I meant rapier champions at Pennsic. We are always looking for good heralds. But you would be welcome at any rapier event to herald. We are looking into making it more splashy. Thanks!

If I snubbed you at opening ceremonies, I'm very, very sorry. It certainly wouldn't have been intentional. If I did, please talk to me about it. I wound up dropping out of heralding the Rose Tourney partway though the first round, as my voice was shot from repairing tents in the midnight rain the night before. We lost quite a few heralds for that; at least four were attending the Rapier Champions which were running at the same time.

I'm sorry you couldn't find me at Pennsic. I put in my LJ that I was camped in Arindale, where I've been for the last several years. I thought you responded to that? Due to heat sickness, I rarely left camp unless needed to attend Their Majesties or do laundry.

Unfortunately for a number of people, Their Majesties decided to have a very few heralds so that we could move through the docket at a very rapid pace, since on paper we had 2-1/2 hours of Court. There were only going to be three heralds for twenty-some pieces of business. Additionally, Adhemar said he wanted to read a few pieces that were for his people, and who can deny the ancient right of Brigantia?

I'm really sorry heraldry didn't work out as you wanted at War. Are you going to Canterbury?

You were preoccupied with forming up the procession, so a little short. I'll survive. No hard feelings. I was just very extraneous, when some years I am the marshal. Mostly, it was my overgrown expectations, as Shepherd's Crook, to have had more to do. Rather like last Crown Tourney, in fact, when the march was well in hand without my involvement. When I have perspective, I realize perfectly well that it is much better that multiple people, yourself and Istvan included, know how to do either without me.

I couldn't find Arindale without going over to Mystic Mail and paging back through my LJ to find your block number, which I suppose I should've done. Oh well.

Their Majesties' court ran very smoothly! You had good people.

I will be at Canterbury - I am the MOL du jour, though I hope [livejournal.com profile] donastraya will supervise the tournament list for K&Q Champs. We'll see if I can get in any heraldry, but that'll depend on how much I'm needed at the Lists table.

It was really wonderful getting to know you and J better (and now I've found you on LJ, yippee!) I hope that trend continues through the coming years. Sorry we're so geographically distant.

I am glad Seamus could ease the ladies' feet. I was behind our tent, napping in the shade with my own feet in cold water. He was thrilled to have so many willing people to play games with, all in once place.

I am glad you wrote about the Wolgemutations concert. We heard it while walking back from market, and I imagined instantly that it was Wolgemut playing a variety of electrified somethings-or-other, but it's nice to have that confirmed. I guess I ought to have read my Pennsic booklet more closely.

In any case, it was a pleasure Pennsicking with you. Hope we see you again sometime during the year. Do you go to Harper's Retreat? We may be there, also likely at Birka, and who knows wherelse.
