Repeat until automatic:

I am not their archivist (except for the SCA, where I still sorta am).
I do not need utility bills for the house we sold more than a year ago.
I do not need any utility bills from my mother's accounts.
I do not need credit card statements other than those showing big purchases where I might have to make a warranty claim.
I do not need pay stubs prior to the current year, except enough to document my salary history. And if I have the raise letter from the relevant employer, not at all.
I do not need old cancelled checks, except for mortgage documentation etc. and charitable deductions.

If I can just get rid of that much, I should have enough office space to file the rest!

Good rules - I'm working through a similar list myself - I've already filled to large bags with shredding, and I'm not even through one drawer of my four-drawer lateral file.

But ... but ... that's what attics are for. Then you can keep that stuff FOREVER!

I thought that. Now I am moving.

My attic scares me.

*hee hee* If your attic scares you, you should try mine ... it has a sheep skeleton in it.

I was repeating a very similar list yesterday as I cleaned off the shelves in the office. Turned up credit card statements from the 1990s, I did! Now they are shred into little tiny pieces. I'm so happy I invested in a heavy duty shredder.

BTW, re the SCA stuff. I'll take anything off your hands you think should be transferred to the Baronial archives.

We'll see about the baronial archives. [livejournal.com profile] goldsquare may be passing some stuff along to me, and I'm glad to know there's another pair of willing hands for the excess. How's your Pikestaff collection, for instance? Also Board minutes?

That sounds like one of my projects for my week off. Whee.

Having no interest in spending a week-long chunk on it, I'm doing 15 minutes at a time. Nibbling the project to death.

I'm hoping it won't take me longer than a morning.

Yay, Fling! I emptied two more folders left over from projects I never got around to for Holt the other day. *I* do not have years worth of financial stuff because my paranoid husband takes them and puts them who-knows-where when I declare a folder too full. There are days I really hope I die first so I don't have to go through his/our stuff. I need to fling more of my own stuff before I can die, so maybe I'll have to live another fifty years or so. :-)

I love that. I have tried most of those, but it's a good reminder to check the file to see if I have lapsed. :-)

Need it?? Or not??

Pictures: yes
Holiday (and birthday) cards: no
Wedding cards: still keeping
Annual letters: somewhere in the middle

Once I get the desk and the boxes near it under control, there's several more boxes in the store-room that will be a whole nother problem: photos taken by or of my parents and their friends. I've already established that some of those can go - my dad liked to take pictures of his own garden, and I really don't need 'em. But pictures of my parents at Lake George with their chums Dick and Dotty Moore (e.g.), those will take more deciding.
