The NY Times beautifully skewers the new Kevin Kline production of King Lear:

They provide several nice phrases suitable for jazzing up display ads in next Sunday's Theatre section ("he is an actor of a high order, and some finely wrought moments glitter like multifaceted gems") but much of the review is populated by pointed jabs ("the production is riddled with holes where feelings should be").

It's lovely prose throughout, and leaves me undecided whether I'd want to go - and see Kline in a loincloth! - or not.

We saw Kevin Kline in one of the comedies years ago in Shakespeare in the Park. (At the moment, there is no way that I can remember which one!) He was fabulous. I'm not sure if I would go out of my way to see him in King Lear. But I suspect that it would be enjoyable even if flawed.

LOL! Oh, that's beautiful.

And you know someone will take a cell phone video of Kline in a loincloth, so you'll be able to save a pile of cash.

So of course, I had to go figure out what play it was we saw. It was Much Ado About Nothing, with Kevin Kline as Benedick. In 1988! How is that possible? I was thinking, Kevin Kline isn't possibly ready to play Lear, but I forgot to add in the 20 years!
