Had a very good time at Birka-con this weekend, despite not managing to do several of the things I had planned on.

Friday night we had dinner in the hotel pub after checking in to the event. At 5 below or so, it was much too cold to make the trek out for Chinese, so we lingered over food and plenty of drinks, so late that we missed our chance to loll in the hot tub, which closed at 10:00. [livejournal.com profile] tpau was on a mission to get drunk, and succeeded.

This year we scored one of the renovated rooms overlooking the front of the hotel, with a Sleep Number bed. (Nice bed, though I wouldn't pay that kind of money for one for home.) Much better than last year, when we abutted the back of the elevator shaft & heard them running all night.

Saturday we didn't get up promptly, meaning that we inadvertently missed Edward Grey's squiring to HRH. Did run in to Edward later, wearing his stiff and shiny new belt, and congratulated him. Edward is a noble and gentle fellow, and a hot stick: I expect he'll be Sir Edward real soon - or perhaps Prince Edward.

Instead of going to Liam's thing on Peers and Students, which I had attended at EKU in November, [livejournal.com profile] bhairavi and I curled up with her Chola Names books in the ladies' dressing room. I now understand more about the gigantic scope of her project. Even though she's working on only the women's names, there are still more than 2,000 of them, each with multiple elements such as patronymics and titles. Then there are the 400 temple-dancers just at one temple (full roster included). I doubt she'll finish even enough for her first paper to be presented at Pennsic University this year, since she's working and in school too, but it's an epic and worthwhile project - and AFAIK nobody else is doing anything with Tamil naming, much less in the period 900-1200 AD. Maybe when my mind is done being boggled I'll be able to help her target and refine her task.

Shopping, which is one of the principal points of Birka, filled the first half of my afternoon. No big purchases this year, partly because Thorny Rose didn't have any doublets [livejournal.com profile] jducoeur and I both liked for him, and the sari pickings were thin indeed. I did get a set of new lacing rings for my Italian court gown, which is now too big and hangs from my shoulders. Also some galengale and ginger chunks for Ipocras, silk embroidery floss, and a pattern for men's breeches so I can make a new pair before Justin grows holes in the ones he's got. Of course, Justin and I had spent $400 on books at Poison Pen Press two weeks ago, so she had nothing new we needed.

Court was late, of course. I don't know why I thought they'd stick to schedule. And see the EK list for the discussion of the entourage member taking flash pictures, agin the kingdom law. But high points: Christian was inducted into the Order of the Golden Rapier, apparently directly related to a recent bout in the royal championships. Rosina and Kagetaru got AOAs, both good and fitting. (I'd expected Rosina's new office as head of the Narrowworkers' Guild to be confirmed in court, since she and the charter were there anyway, but that didn't happen.) Toward the end of court, Lady Segnat and Sir Ankara were called in, so that the former could present the latter with a small gift (a Lego knight in combat, painted with Ankara's arms). Ankara called for one of her men-at-arms to join them on the dais on some flimsy pretext involving a reciprocal gift for Segnat. When he said he had not brought a gift, right on cue the Queen handed him a small velvet box, and said, "Perhaps you could give her this." (Segnat said yes - and even the King was caught dabbing his eyes.)

After court we went out for sushi to the usual place. They were only mildly overwhelmed by a party of nine (considering the shop only seats about 25). Service was cheerful, if a little inefficient - Valeria's sashimi appetizer was served after she finished her teriyaki entree - but we had a merry time anyway. (Jay House gets bonus points for splitting our checks correctly.) And again, we stayed over dinner so late I missed my chance to hot tub with [livejournal.com profile] anastasiav and little Evan. At least I had a chance to say hello to Evan for the first time since he was a week old.

Sunday morning there was nothing to stay on site for, no Curia Regis this year, so we were checked out and home well before noon.

ETA: What I didn't do: help out as an MOL or a court herald, buy a sari, boil myself in the hot tub, meet little Aeryn, find a birthday present for [livejournal.com profile] jducoeur.

It was good to see you if however brief. I don't know that I caught your attention or not. How are you doing these days?

Aw shucks! Did you want to Court Herald? I had posted to the EKHeralds list looking for volunteers.

::hugs::

I saw your post, and wanted to help you with Court, but as it transpired, I was right not to offer - having spent the whole day on my feet, I just didn't have the stamina this time. Keep me in mind in the general case, since it's skill I want to develop based on my few flirtations with it.
