Polka Peascods Downfall

No s--t, there I was in Dragonsspine, kingdom of the Outlands. We had been feted and welcomed by the seneschal and baron & baroness, and Justin was playing Visiting Laurel Dancemaster. We were dancing the last dance of the evening, Gathering Peascods, to the peppy Polka arrangement. Splat! I tripped -- either on my garb hem or over my own two feet, and fell hard onto the concrete patio. Owwwww! I hurt my shoulder, bad. Eventually I was persuaded to let [livejournal.com profile] memorman escort us to the hospital to get it checked out. They took x-rays, and apparently I've broken my shoulder! I declined surgery there in Colorado, but got it all bound up with big velcro straps and will see a Boston orthopedist on Monday for whatever treatment seems required: a pin, a cast, or whatever. (Yes, I've talked with my primary care physician and she endorses the delay.)

It's not quite "so there I was climbing Pikes Peak" but it's still a pretty decent story...

Well I hope you will soon be on the mend but I have to say your post made me LOL. Polka peascods! Who knew!

The polka version has been used at dance practise, on and off, for a couple years now.

Yeow! Good grief ... that's a good excuse not to dance on a concrete floor, that's for sure ... hope it's not TOO much pain -- good luck with that.

I seem to recall that chemo weakens bones substantially, and wonder if that played a factor in your injury. Hard to know for sure, of course.

[identity profile] rufinia.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
oh my god! Don't do that!

Feel better, enjoy the drugs.

[identity profile] liamstliam.livejournal.com 2006-09-08 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Sending prayers your way.

[identity profile] ladysprite.livejournal.com 2006-09-09 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, geez - I'm so sorry to hear this!

I've always thought that was a dangerous dance.... :)

Feel better soon!

[identity profile] elizabear.livejournal.com 2006-09-09 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Gah! Lemme know if I can help.

[identity profile] msmemory.livejournal.com 2006-09-09 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Depending on how immobilized they make my arm, and for how long, I may need a ride now & then... :) Thanks!

You bet - see my journal for my weekly schedule (locked, naturally).

Ouch! Hope you have a swift recovery!

[identity profile] nudgeprincess.livejournal.com 2006-09-09 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
See the kinds of things that dancing can lead to! So sorry honey--hope it heals quickly and please let me know if you need a anything.

[identity profile] galaneia.livejournal.com 2006-09-09 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Ouch! Thinking good thoughts for you.

[identity profile] ealdthryth.livejournal.com 2006-09-09 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yikes! Hope it's not too bad.

[identity profile] oakleaf-mirror.livejournal.com 2006-09-09 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, no! Hopefully, the they can fix it, soon, and you're not in too much pain, in the meantime (or after).

(1) Yeeeeeowch!

(2) You managed to break your shoulder? Doing Gathering Peascods? I think you win some sort of award.

[identity profile] rufinia.livejournal.com 2006-09-09 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Gathering Peascods is inherently dangerous. There's foot squashing potential, slippery floors can increase the danger factor, and missed cues on the high fives sometimes (or the boob jump, whihc nearly killed Dierdre once). The only other dance I know of with a higher injury potential is "Toss the Wench" (which i know has a real name, but I forget, but the music is also "Ding Dong Merrily on High.") (I know someone who shattered an ankle on that and swears she is reason they don't dance in in the MidRealm anymore.) (Which isn't entirely true, I saw it once, but there was a stern safety lecture beforehand.)

Good lord! That just sucks... I hope you have a speedy recovery!

More sympathy

[identity profile] pamelina.livejournal.com 2006-09-09 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
Ouch! At least it was the last dance of the evening, and (hopefully) you got to have much dancing fun before you broke.

[identity profile] cvirtue.livejournal.com 2006-09-09 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
... at least it happened at the end of a fun event, so you had that much! I hope it doesn't hurt much and gets fixed soon.

[identity profile] learnedax.livejournal.com 2006-09-09 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Ouch! A good story, but it's not worth the cost. Shoulders are messy.

[identity profile] hfcougar.livejournal.com 2006-09-09 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no! I wish you a speedy recovery.

It never rains but it pours, eh?

Gah! I hope it's easily treated when you get home.

[identity profile] jimpage363.livejournal.com 2006-09-10 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Oh OUCH!

Well, at least it was doing something fun.

Hope you feel better soon!

[identity profile] msmemory.livejournal.com 2006-09-11 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
will depend on whether I need surgery. Either way, I think we should figure on eating in Waltham/Burlington, where you can drive me, instead of Cambridge
