Wow that was fast! Is that the one that was half-read already? I've only got two for the year and am not even half-way through number three yet. I wish I had more time to read. Maybe I just need to pick shorter books. ;^) Or read on a schedule like I do when I'm working for my favorite editor.

That was half-finished already. I usually have two or three books going at once: one in the bedroom/bathroom at home, one in my briefcase, sometimes a third. I had started Fall of Neskaya before getting the Second Coming assignment, and set it aside til I was done with that.

Next up, Trading In Danger by Elizabeth Moon, which I started on the subway last night.

That's one of the few things I miss about long commutes - I used to ride the bus to work and had more time to read. I love working 5 minutes from home, but it doesn't give me much time to read during the commute! :)

I haven't finished anything yet. The way the year's been going so far, I'm not sure I've even started anything!

I just picked up Gaiman's "Coraline" from the Simmons library, which looks like it should be a quick read.

I noticed "The Eyre Affair" while I was there, which was recommended by a friend, and although the plot seemed rather contrived, after seeing the actual book it has a bit more appeal to me.

I also need to read the rest of "All-Of-A-Kind Family", which I read most of last semester when a friend foolishly left it within my reach.

How was it?

I've not read much MZB stuff for several years now, but I read the first 25 or so Darkover books.

Did you know there are sequels to All-of-a-Kind Family? Four total I think, or perhaps five. (Spoilers available.)

This is going to be like the time I meant to only read the first Anne Of Green Gables book, because my friend was in the play, isn't it...

No spoilers, please. Especially if they involve the oldest girl and Charlie. :)

I found that it fell apart about 7/8 of the way through. There was this nice novel going along, which happened to take place on Darkover, and it felt like at the last minute someone said, "Ohmigosh, it's the FALL of Neskaya. Time for Neskaya to fall, then!" Now, if I were an editor....

I haven't liked the MZB and coauthor stuff as much as the original MZB stuff, as a rule. The ones cowritten, or ghosted, by Adrienne Martine-Barnes are not bad, but the others, eh.

Yeah, I just started messing with LJ recently. Wasn't sure what proper etiquette was, so I've been looking for good opportunities to let folks know I'm here. :)

Coraline is a fine book, but it is brief. It won some SF awards under the "novella" category, due to word count.

I picked up a copy of Coraline at Arisia, and have added it to the queue.

Do you know how to estimate the word count of a book? I'm curious whether Trading In Danger, which I am now reading, counts as a novel or a novella.

I vaguely recall once reading established formulas for this, but can't recall where (or the exact formulas). If I was curious enough to do this for a particular book, I'd count the words in ten typical-seeming lines, average them, count the number of lines on a page, and then count the pages (ignoring blank pages, and using half-page increments where appropriate). Actually, you should be able to do that last step faster by simply taking the total number of pages and then subtracting out an estimated number based on the formatting style and the number of chapters. That should get you close enough for most purposes.
