When I was growing up, the day for planting spring bulbs was always Veterans' Day, Nov. 11. Daddy didn't have to work on the holiday, and we would put in tulips and daffodils and crocuses along the wall under the dining room window.
It's taken me close to 20 years to learn that I live 150 miles north of there now, and Planting Day should be Columbus Day. It's heavy grey and cold out there today, with showers/flurries looming, and my bulbs still need to go in. I can't leave it much longer, or those bulbs in the back of my car are going to be nothing but compost.
