Not laid off
Apr. 10th, 2003 02:53 pmWe just had another layoff. 13 people out of 118. I'm not laid off, yay! But they have changed who I report to, and they'll be giving me "more clerical and support tasks." Perhaps that will mean I'm the temporary Benefits person here, but more likely it will mean photocopying and ordering office supplies and lunches.
At least they understand I'm not happy about the new tasks -- remains to be seen, when I meet with my new supervisor, just what those are and what the relationship with her will be like. I'm glad not to be reporting any more to the VP Engineering, who is a Japanese man and therefore not naturally warm, but it is a demotion to be reporting to the Office Manager instead. I hear she's a stickler for things like punctuality, ick.
How they think they're going to manage this site with no secretary and no HR/Office person at all, just a receptionist and me, I have no idea. No bet on whether they keep the site. The building is for sale, and we were going to stay on as the main tenant, but right now we're the sole tenant. Wouldn't a new owner want to repopulate and re-configure the whole space? DJ keeps telling us he wants to keep the offices here and have a Boston operations base, but as the staff gets smaller and smaller, the recession slogs on, and the finances get worse and worse, I wonder why he insists.
When I met briefly with DJ this morning, he said he understood that I wasn't happy about the changed position, and I'm glad of that. It'll be less of a shock if I leave. I was going to sit tight and weather out the recession and the other currents of life for a while, stay here and be useful and earn a steady wage. DJ says it's a temporary thing til we need the added staff again, but we'll see whether that ever comes to pass - I disbelieve.
