Dinner at J's

Summary: delicious!

We had reservations for 8:00, and it turns out we were the last table to be seated, and the last to leave at closing. They put us in a semiprivate room in their converted farmhouse, but there was no one at the other table so it was private.

After some negotiation, so that we were ordering different things, we had:

Exotic Mushroom Fondue with Gouda (wine: Baldwin Apple)
Wild Game Charcuterie plate (wine: Maiden's Blush)
Shellfish Cassoulet (wine: Dry Pear)
Long Island Duck (wine: Semi-sweet Blueberry)
Molten Chocolate Cake (shared) (wine: Plum)

It's a pity that the chef at J's so often takes vacation just at the times when we have special occasions, since every meal we get there for is so lovely.

And for future reference: the winner of the evening was the Mushroom Fondue. Everything was good, but that was spectacular: a flavorful but not overwhelming fondue with enough mushroom to permeate the cheese and just enough sherry to provide an undertone, served with a light but rich bread, toasted with a bit of oil whose flavor complemented the fondue perfectly.

(Besides, it was really cute: a little ramekin of fondue sitting over a votive candle, just enough to be the right size for a substantial one-person appetizer.)
