Heh

The office supply salesdroid followed up today, and I got to tell him straight out that we were not interested, that he shouldn't refer to his Customer Service staff as "girls," especially when selling to a woman manager, and that his pretzels were past their sell-by date. And so I was not motivated to furnish him the item list and prices to help him put together a competitive bid against our present supplier.

I concluded with "Sorry to give you harsh feedback, but maybe it'll help you out down the road. Take care."

The "girls" thing would have been the killer for me. I once got a sales call at home from someone wanting to sell me some home repair services. It just happened to come during a period when one of my brothers was living with me and job hunting, so when the sales person asked for "Mr. Jones" I assumed it was in response to one of his applications. No -- the idiot salesman had assumed: (1) that there was a "Mr" Jones; and (2) that there was no point in even discussing the purpose of his call with any woman who answered the phone. When my brother talked to him, I saw this vicariously gleeful look come over his face in anticipation of what I was likely to say when he handed the phone back over. Somehow, I neglected to explain to the salesman that I never purchase goods or services from cold sales calls in the first place. It was much more fun to leave him with the impression that he had lost the potential sale purely on his own mistaken gender stereotyping.

I got an email today about my replacement (from my supervisor) that called her "the new girl". She's my age, with a school-age child.

Awesome - honest and polite. A nice combination and, if he's smart, it really will help him sometime down the road.

Thanks for posting in my journal today. You're already in my flist. I would have replied directly to the comment, but that would unscreen it, and I want to keep those screened.
